St George Illawarra flyer Brett Morris crossed in the final minute to hold South Sydney to a 26-26 draw and deny the Rabbitohs a third straight Charity Shield win on Saturday.

Souths' recent dominance of the annual preseason clash looked set to continue before Morris levelled the scores, and the Dragons could have pinched it with the final kick.

But in greasy conditions at Sydney's Olympic stadium, reliable goal kicker Jamie Soward missed narrowly to the right of the target to confirm the fourth draw in the competition's history.

St George Illawarra retains its 14-9 edge over South Sydney in 27 meetings since 1982.

Fetuli Talanoa scored a hat-trick as the Rabbitohs showed off star recruits Sam Burgess and Dave Taylor, while Rhys Wesser returned from a long-term knee injury.
