RABBITOHS star Rhys Wesser has joined the growing list of CQ-born footballers who have backed the push for a Rockhampton-based NRL side.

While Wesser would love to see a CQ team running about in the top league in 2013, he fears it's a bit too far out for him to think of playing.

However, during a visit to Rockhampton yesterday, he said he'd be happy to be involved in some way.

“I think it would be really good,” Wesser said.

“Rockhampton and Central Queensland have been big supporters of league over many years.

“It would be a great spot to have a team on the ground.”

The Sydney-based player who has spent most of this season on the sidelines said he'd heard the Central Comets Queensland Cup side had been drawing good crowds at Browne Park.

“I hear the Comets team is winning a few games this season and pulling in big crowds,” Wesser said.

“If you look at the NRL games, clubs are getting between 10,000 and 15,000 people, so it's not too far off.

“People will want to see NRL clubs.”

He said he would see what happened with his career, but 2013 was “quite a way off”.

At the moment Wesser is eyeing off a possible return for the Rabbitohs if they manage to make this year's finals.

“It's been disappointing for myself because I've been injured since round two with a knee problem,” he said.

“I've just started light running again.”

He said it was a tough ask, but if the side played to its potential it could make the top eight.

Wesser said the club was buzzing with the thought of Blackwater product and Broncos prop Dave Taylor arriving at Redfern next year.

“He's a great buy,” Wesser said.

“Dave's a young bloke with plenty of ability who has really impressed me.

“Everyone at the club is rubbing their hands at the thought of his arrival.”

Meanwhile, Wesser was in Rockhampton yesterday speaking to youth at Milbi Farm on the importance of setting goals and making something of their lives.

He was taking part in a mentoring program for children aged between 11 and 15 and another program aimed at tackling binge drinking for people aged between 17 and 24. His grandmother had played a key role in the forming of Milbi Incorporated.

Wesser will stay until next Wednesday and will be at Elizabeth Park tomorrow between 10am and midday for a clinic with youngsters.
