The long drive home for the many Souths supporters who made the trek up the F3 for the Newcastle game must have seemed like a it was 1000 miles long after enduring yet another disappointing and heart-breaking loss against the over-achieving Knights. Unfortunately, the under-achieving Rabbitohs had to slink back into their luxury hotel in Newcastle for the night to lick their wounds and get ready for the quick backup for this weeks game against the Tigpies at a barren and desolate ANZ Stadium. The 25-20 loss was yet another bitter pill to swallow for all Souths tragics. Fortunately for me though, my trip home only lasted 10 minutes and to my relief, Foxtel will entertain me for the rest of the season as those perennial under-achievers battle away in the wooden spoon danger zone. It matters not what the team does for the rest of the season. As far as I can see, the damage for this year has already been done and the once mighty red and green machine is only a shadow of what was expected of it for this season. Thanks for that must go to the North Sydney game plan of stealing defeat from the jaws of victory time and time again! Onya JT, former Bear!! Only a miracle of substantial proportions will save this team from going down in history as the biggest disappointment since the Dogs robbed us of the wooden spoon by having 37 points taken off them, thus stealing our timberware. Its not all negative though. On the contrary. Issac Luke still continues to shine when he's on the field. For mine, he will be the Rabbitohs Player of the Year in 2009 and will clean up on awards night. See how far wrong I am if you can afford the over-priced ticket to go! (I'm sure there are some other pluses too but they don't readily come to mind.) For a good feeling news story you have to look no further than the Souths Toyota Cup Under 20's team. These boys enjoy what they do and undertake their jobs without all the fanfare of their higher profile senior outfit. They love their supporters being there for them and go to great lengths to thank their fans after each game, win lose or draw. For that, they win a much greater place in the hearts of those who turn up early to watch their exploits than those who take their fans for granted later on. The boys scored a magnificent 34 to 16 win over the Knights and were propelled by livewire Malcolm Webster, who crossed for two tries and was a thorn in the side of the home team all game with a number of magical incisions. Nathan Peats also bagged a double, with Cameron Pitman, Kane Morgan and Junior Vaivai crossing for one each. The Rabbitohs forwards made good metres all night, led by captain Jason Clark and set the platform for the backs with Webster, Adam Reynolds, Junior Vaivai and Kane Morgan looking particularly dangerous with the ball in hand. At present they sit 8th in their competition and with any luck will give disgruntled, disillusioned and disenchanted South fans something to sing about come semi-final's time. I hope so anyway and wish them well on all our behalves. At this weeks game the boys will be joining The Burrow as we entertain a group of youngsters from the Alexandria Park Community School. These kids are members of a 'breakfast club' and will be undertaking a meet-and-greet with the 20's boys during Souths first grade game with the Tigers. At present it would seem that the kids are more excited about the prospects of spending the day with the 20's, rather than watching first grade. You can hardly blame them can you? I have no doubts that all these kids will come away from this game with new heroes to look up to and new goals set for their future endeavours. I also think that household names of the future for Souths will be putting their best foot forward in the name of helping kids. For that, ya gotta love these guys! Thought for the week: A fish rots from the head.
