Rugby league has taken up that most American of sporting appendages, the cheerleader. Apparently it started late in the 19th century as an all male activity. It basically involved cheering or chanting to motivate the team. Then in the 1920’s females started to get involved and the dance routines were incorporated.
I don’t know when they arrived at the greatest game but all professional clubs now have them except the Sydney Rabbitohs, who banned them in 2007. Some say it’s sexist, others think they add colour to a game.
Well if they dress reasonably modestly, that takes the negative angle out. I think the ones pictured could be dressed a bit more. League is a family game so it goes without saying their outfits should accommodate that. They should dress for the weather as well, if it’s cold or wet.
They do add colour through well rehearsed drills and enthusiasm for the home team. They also add some femininity to a rough, male dominated sport. So as long as all the things above are addressed, I can’t see there is any problem with cheerleaders.
