A New Beginning......Again!![]() South Sydney Rabbitohs training, Redfern Oval. Dave Taylor (L) and Sam Burgess. Source: The Daily Telegraph Firstly, may I welcome everyone to the new season and I trust we all had an enjoyable off-season in preparation for what lies ahead for all Red and Green "Bloods" in 2010.
The new additions to the Rabbitohs forward pack looks to be the most exciting thing that has happened at the club in years and the anticipation of renewed success has us all believing that we are on the threshold of something very special, with that elusive Premiership No 21 hopefully just around the corner.
The arrival of the much vaunted Englshman Sam Burgess along with the addition of Dave Taylor and Ben Ross gives the powerhouse an awesomely explosive look and will no doubt bring the best out of the likes of Roy Asotasi, Scott Geddes, Eddy Pettybourne and co. Luke Stuart also has the possibility to go out a winner in 2010 in what is shaping as his grand finale` to an illustrious playing career.
This weeks Return to Redfern (RTR) event on Sunday the 7th of February, kicking off at 6pm, will no doubt go a long way towards focusing our players and supporters on this seasons utlimate goal, the NRL Premiership. Its been a long frustrating march for Souths supporters over the years and the start of each and every season brings new hope, money is wagered, statements are made and visions are seen that have on most occasions proved to be fruitless but this season there's a new buzz at Redfern and the signs are all good for that long awaited Rabbitoh revival to finally arrive.
The hype that surrounded the courting and subsequent signing of Sam Burgess has to be the biggest coup for the Rabbits in years and could see the young man attain legendary status alongside countless other Souths greats. Without putting too much pressure on the youngster, if he can live up to the air of anticipation that comes with his signing, I'm tipping Burgess to hit the NRL with a blast and spearhead a top-four placing for the Bunnies. From there, anything's possible.
Opinions this year will be like spare tyres though, everyone will have one but only a certain number will have the correct one, which inevitably allows them the power to gloat. I hope to be gloating all season!
With these additions to the forwards it should allow the backs more room to move and I do expect players of the calibre of Colin Best and Rhys Wesser, who have had mediocre season at Souths, to rise to the occasion and justify the faith that has been placed in them with their move to Redfern. Throw in Jamie Simpsons freakish abilities and a host of other talented players and the Rabbitohs backline shapes as the NRL's number 1 this season. See how far off I am on that one!
It's probably no surprise then but I'm tipping Nathan Merritt to climb to the top of the seasons top try-scorers list and break all Rabbitoh try-scoring records in the process. For the uninitiated, the current record is held by Les Brennan who crossed for 29 tries in 1954 and I do expect the flying ex-Rover to go one better, perhaps even two!
There's much to be said and even much more to be written about season 2010 in coming months. I can only hope that we get the chance to leave the best until last.
Good luck in 2010 and Go the Rabbitohs!!!!!!
See you at RTR.
