October 29, 2009 03:25pm GREATNESS is a matter of perspective, really. So when we come to choose the Noughties' greatest sporting moment, we're never going to agree. It's all a matter of opinion … and geography. For instance, Port Adelaide's breakthrough 2004 AFL premiership was a huge moment for South Australians, Power supporters or not. For Port fans it was the final answer to the finals "chokers" tag. For Crows supporters it was unmitigated disaster, the day that other team did South Australia proud. Great sporting moments - cast your vote hereSurely all Australia would concede that Anna Meares' miraculous silver medal in Beijing was a great moment in sport. Meares was magnificent in the women's sprint just months after an accident in a World Cup event came close to leaving her a quadriplegic. But should that rank among the top 10 moments for the decade? Many Australians would reluctantly say no. But she's one of ours, so South Australians probably feel that little bit more strongly about it. It's all a matter of where you live. The South Sydney Rabbitohs' resurrection after being dumped by the NRL was a huge story. After all, an estimated 80,000 disgruntled fans marched in late 2000 to demand the return of the proud club. And this chap named Russell Crowe got involved, too. Federal Court action ensured the Rabbitohs returned in a huge moment in the nation's sporting history. But it doesn't resonate so much with South Aussies as it does in lands where NRL rules. So don't beat up on us when it appears in our national poll. Not that all great sporting moments have to be positive – it's about villains as well as heroes, about disasters as much as triumphs. Australia's loss of the Ashes in 2005 was a bleak day for Ricky Ponting and his men, but it was one of the great Test series ever played. "Lay Down" Sally Robbins' meltdown in the 2004 eights in Athens was just as dramatic as events in 2005, when John Aloisi's strike sent Australia to the World Cup finals or in 2000, when Cathy Freeman raced to gold in the Sydney Olympics 400m final. Maybe the greatest moment wasn't about an athlete at all. Makybe Diva's effort in making it three Melbourne Cups straight was extraordinary. Was it the irony of Steve Bradbury's amazing gold-medal winning effort in 2002? Even he couldn't believe his luck as he grabbed our first Winter Olympics gold, proving that in skating, the first step to victory is not falling down. They did, he didn't and an Olympic final was won. If we could pinpoint the moment when Tiger Woods truly announced his greatness it would be when he showed the improbable was not impossible by sinking THAT chip in the final round of the 2005 US Masters.
