New Castleford Tigers signing Dean Widders has set his sights on a play-off place in Super League XIV.

The Tigers finished bottom last year, but the back-row forward - who joined from the South Sydney Rabbitohs - said that the Tigers are aiming high.

"If we don't make the eight we'll be disappointed at the end of the year," he told BBC Radio Leeds.

"That's the goal for all the teams and we'll be happy if we can get in there and then it's a different ball game."

He added: "That's going to be a big challenge for us because it means we've got to be consistent and we've got to win games away from home, so that's the challenge."

Widders said he was relishing the prospect of testing himself against the Super League's big guns.

"The teams like Bradford, St Helens, Leeds and Wigan are well heard of in Australia and are world-class teams," he added.

"When you play against them you know the level is going to rise.

"But rugby is a funny game and anyone can beat anyone.

"Those are the games we are going to be up for because if we're not we're going to be in a bit of trouble."
