Peter Cassidy South Sydney fans can breathe a sigh of relief: Craig Wing has not got a broken leg.
The Rabbitohs' star play-maker has been sighted hobbling around on crutches, but he has assured fans he'll be back and rearing to go for the club's first round clash with the Roosters.
"No, not at all. I don't have a broken ankle," Wing told Fairfax after the sighting.
"I just had a spur - a minor spur - taken off my ankle. I'm not in plaster or anything, I just have a stretchy, elastic wrap around it, but yes, I am on crutches at the moment.
"I've just got to stay off it for a week. The doc actually said after a couple of days I should be on one crutch and then, a couple of days after that, I should be walking. It's just a minor thing and I'll be back in training in a couple of weeks.
"With the ankle, I would have had to get it done eventually, but it could have probably waited until I retired.
“But I thought because I was getting my hernia done, I might as well get the ankle done now because the recovery time on my ankle is a lot less than what the hernia repair is. It made sense to get it done at the same time."
Wing admitted he expects to be 100% for the Bunnies' trial matches, including the annual Charity Shield grudge match against the Dragons
"Oh, I'll be back on the 5th (of January). I'll be in the rehab squad for a little while, but I'll be back the same time as everyone else." No, not at all. I don't have a broken ankle Craig Wing
