South Sydney coach John Lang hopes Sunday's thrashing of the Wests Tigers proves his side is more than just a two-man team of high-profile recruits Dave Taylor and Sam Burgess. The Rabbitohs produced easily their best team display of the season as they dismantled an inept Tigers 50-10 at the SCG. After a slow start to the season, the Rabbitohs have now won five of their last seven matches to sit comfortably in the top eight. Boom Englishman Burgess and former Brisbane backrower Taylor have played a major role in the club's resurgence with a number of powerhouses performances over the opening 10 rounds. And while admitting the talented duo would be an integral part of the club for years to come, Lang was quick to point out there was more to his side than just his two recruits. "I keep saying our team's not about Dave Taylor and Sam Burgess," the delighted Bunnies coach said. "They're two outstanding young talents that I think are going to get better and have outstanding careers." "But we've got a team and they just play a part of it." "For us, to have a good win as a team, even though the Tigers were well below their best, it's great for the for-and-against and it helps build that belief in what you're capable of." And the Rabbitohs are capable of anything this season if they continue with the form that destroyed the Tigers. While Taylor and Burgess produced typically strong performances for South Sydney, they weren't alone. Winger Nathan Merritt, who kicked a last-ditch field goal to win the corresponding clash last year, again tormented the Tigers by scoring a hat-trick, while Beau Champion nabbed a double. But it was five-eight John Sutton who was the most impressive for Lang's side, displaying all of his prodigious talent and also sending a last-minute reminder to NSW selectors. "He was in everything," Lang said of Sutton. "He's been playing quite well but not at his best form. Until the bye, he was second in the competition on the try assists so he's got a tremendous talent." "If we gel as a team, he'll go even better." Rabbitohs hooker Issac Luke said his side's much-improved defence - not the nine-try, 50-point performance - was the best part of the victory. "Our main goal was to defend strong and we managed to get in their face and defend our line," he said. "They must have seen us coming for the whole 80 minutes." "That's what we need to do every week." Photograph Copyright : Getty Images
