There have been all kinds of drama in the last seven days - some for good, most for the bad which put a big slant on the great game of Rugby League and the NRL in Season 2010. The Melbourne Storm and its saga surrounding the salary cap breach has dominated talkback radio and newspaper headlines over the last week, however there was a round of the matches played over the Anzac Day weekend. Injuries once again stood out with the Bulldogs losing four players, while Roosters will be without two regulars and Origin for 2010 is still a month away. Round seven had everything a league fan could desire with thrilling comebacks by the Eels, Rabbitohs and Titans, while the Storm showed they are battle-hardened with a demolition of the Warriors. Canterbury, Cronulla and Penrith put the bite on their opponents, while the Dragons cooked the Chooks in Sunday’s feature match at the SFS. Round eight begins as usual on Friday night when the Eels and Bulldogs meet at Homebush. Parramatta is unchanged for what is being hyped up as a 2009 Preliminary Final rematch between the two clubs. Canterbury, meanwhile, have been forced to make up to four changes through injury to key personnel with Josh Morris (eye fracture), Ben Hannat (knee), Ben Roberts and Yileen Gordon (ankle) ruled out. Former Panther Junior Tia-Kilifi, Michael Hodgson, Mickey Paea and Jarrad Hickey have been named as replacements. Brisbane hosts Newcastle with Denan Kemp (broken ribs), Corey Norman and Steve Michaels recalled in place of injured pair Antonio Winterstein (hamstring) and Andrew McCullough (pectoral muscle). Daniel Tolar replaces Steve Simpson in the Knights squad, while Con Mika retains his place on the extended interchange bench. After a mauling by the Storm, the Warriors host an inconsistent Canberra outfit. Super Saturday begins in Auckland at the earlier 3pm (AEST) timeslot with three games to follow throughout the evening. Patrick Ah Van and Jeremy Latimore have been named in the Warriors line-up, while Jacob Lillyman misses out. The Raiders have named Marc Herbert and Troy Thompson on an extended six-man bench. The Gold Coast Titans are unchanged for its clash with Penrith. The Panthers meanwhile have named an unchanged starting line-up and added Wade Graham to an extended bench with Joseph Paulo omitted. Scott Prince has been earmarked for a return to the Titans line-up though faces fitness tests later this week as he overcomes a broken thumb. North Queensland tackles Melbourne at home with Ashley Graham replacing John Williams on the wing, allowing Will Tupou to start in the centres. The Storm travel north without Brett White who was suspended today after accepting the early guilty plea to a grade one dangerous contact charge, though do welcome back Greg Inglis from an ankle injury along with Kevin Proctor and Hep Cahill. St George-Illawarra has made no changes as it prepares for the derby clash with rivals Cronulla to round out the Super Saturday action. The Sharks meanwhile have named Paul Aiton on a five-man bench. The trial run of youngster Blake Lazarus in the half-back role appears over for now with skipper Robbie Farah named in his place for the Wests Tigers home game against the Sydney Roosters at Campbelltown on Sunday. Mark Flanagan will partner Gareth Ellis in the second row, while West Magpies’ NSW Cup halfback Nathan Waters is poised for his NRL debut after being named on the interchange bench. A fractured shoulder has sidelined Roosters’ half Mitchell Pearce indefinitely, and the Roosters hope to overcome his loss with Todd Carney moved to half back while Anthony Minichiello set to fill in at fullback. Ben Jones has been named in the centres. South Sydney and Manly complete the round on Sunday afternoon with the both naming unchanged squads. There’s no Monday night Football this weekend as the representative season begins on Friday week, May 7 with the annual Australia vs. New Zealand Test and the NSW City vs. Country Origin match.
