1 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (1) 12-4 Ran all over the Roosters in the second half. The consistency of the Dragons has been tremendous. They have not lost two consecutive games all season and have put together three winning streaks of three games or better. 2 BULLDOGS (2) 11-4

Had their chance to beat Manly at Brookvale. Even after the Sea Eagles had edged ahead by a point the Bulldogs twice got far enough down the other end of the field to threaten, but inexplicably poor passing let them down on each occasion.

3 MELBOURNE (4) 10-1-5 Didn't beat the Knights by much at home, but the important thing was that they stayed close enough to give themselves a chance of winning, which they took. Remember that the Knights, even with players out, can really frustrate opponents. 4 GOLD COAST (3) 10-5 In their first two seasons, had they been missing as many key players as they were against the Raiders last Sunday they would have been flogged. But they are made of different stuff now, and most of the injured brigade are back this week. 5 NORTH QUEENSLAND (5) 9-7 Got hammered by injuries against the Sharks, and didn't have much of the ball in the first half, but showed tremendous courage to put a big gap between the two teams after halftime. But those injuries have left a hole in them. 6 MANLY (6) 8-7 Why are the Sea Eagles still sixth and the Bulldogs second, despite the Sea Eagles having beaten the Bulldogs? All of the teams ranked in the top six have won more games than they have lost recently, and the Sea Eagles were at home, after all. 7 PENRITH (8) 8-7

They had a lot of players out injured, so they will have taken the 38-34 win over the Eels without despairing too much about their defence on the day. They've got a heap out again this week, but that doesn't mean they can't beat the Rabbitohs.

8 NEWCASTLE (7) 9-7

They put up a courageous performance to almost beat the Storm despite having a lot of players out injured, but the fact is they have now lost three of their last four games - and their only win during that time was over the struggling Rabbitohs.

9 BRISBANE (10) 9-7

Their display in beating the Warriors won't provide too much footage for the end-of-season highlight reel, but after four straight losses they'll gladly take it - just as they'll gladly take the bye week while their State of Origin players are missing.

10 CANBERRA (11) 6-9 For the third time this season, the Raiders have won two games in a row. The first time they did it, they followed it up with four straight losses. The second time, they followed it up with two straight losses. Time to follow it up with some more wins. 11 CRONULLA (9) 5-11 Had more than enough ball to build a lead against the Cowboys, but because they had so many key players out injured or suspended they just couldn't make anything happen. Another team that will really appreciate having the bye this week. 12 WESTS TIGERS (14) 6-10

They may have managed to convince themselves they are still a chance to make the finals after their big win over the Rabbitohs, but I'm not buying it. They can't string wins together, and until they learn to they will be finals spectators.

13 PARRAMATTA (12) 5-1-9

Their game against the Panthers developed into a tit-for-tat affair in which it looked a long way from home like it was going to be last try wins. Unfortunately for the Eels, they came up with the second-last try and went down by four points.

14 WARRIORS (13) 5-1-9

Stayed on the Gold Coast after their loss to the Titans, rather than go home and come back the same week to play the Broncos, but still couldn't find the right formula for winning on the road. Their travel sickness is going to ruin their season.

15 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (15) 4-12

They had a go against the Dragons, but as soon as the opposition clicked after halftime the night was over for the chooks. The embarrassing thing is that, as bad as their record is on the field, their record off it is even worse.

16 SOUTH SYDNEY (16) 5-1-9 That was truly embarrassing against the Tigers. The Rabbitohs haven't been a high-scoring team in recent years, but they could usually rely on their defence to keep them in the game. Now that is starting to let them down. Tough times.
