FORMER South Sydney skipper Mario Fenech was one of the most passionate players ever to pull on the famous red and green jersey. But Fenech, who earned the nickname Test Match because he played every game with such a high intensity, has been disappointed with the club's recent form. So much so he wrote this open letter to the struggling Rabbitoh fans.

TO SAY I am bitterly disappointed with South Sydney's performance over the last few weeks is an understatement.

The last time Souths turned up to play was against Melbourne in Perth a few weeks ago and I thought we were unlucky to lose the game.

In my mind I thought we might have turned the corner and our run to the semis would start.

Boy, was I wrong.

Now Souths supporters, myself included, are scratching our heads wondering where we can go from here. Coach Jason Taylor and the team are certainly accountable for their performances.

Trust me, I hate losing with a passion but my loyalty and support for Taylor and the players is still rock solid.

My simple view is that we all stick together as members, fans and former players and show our loyalty to our team.

The saying goes you find out who your friends are when you really need them.

And Souths certainly need our support now.

All I ever wanted from my team was for them to have a go and be competitive.

After the woeful match against the Wests Tigers, who are running near the bottom of the table, there weren't many Souths players who could hold their heads up. Souths are one of the most famous clubs in the league and have won more competitions than any other club.

I approached this season with a little more confidence than previous seasons thinking my beloved Rabbitohs were finally heading in the right direction.

This year's NRL competition currently is one of the closest that I can remember with very little between most of the teams in the competition. As a football club and a business Souths have never been healthier with a membership base close to the largest in the game and a sponsorship portfolio in great shape as well.

It's just such a shame that we can't say the same thing about what's happening on the field.

Souths owe it to the fans to turn up week in and week out with their boots on and perform to the best of their ability.

Come on boys!

Next time you put on that famous 101-year-old red and green jersey understand that you carry the hopes and dreams of all our long-suffering members and fans.

All I ask is that you wear the jersey with pride.

If you can do that then things will take care of themselves - trust me.
