BOOM Broncos prop Dave Taylor appears to be paying a heavy price for agreeing to join South Sydney next year.

Considered the hottest prop on the market a few months ago, he has now been banished to the Central Coast Comets. With the Broncos coming off two heavy losses and minus their Origin players for tomorrow night's match against Cronulla at Toyota Stadium, Taylor turned out last night for the Comets in the Queensland Cup.

Former Brisbane captain Gorden Tallis described the situation as "strange'' and suggested the Broncos should consider releasing the 20-year-old immediately if they don't want him. "If you don't want him, what's the use of hurting the kid when he's going to go next year anyway?'' said Tallis, who is the Souths forwards coach.

"He's an NRL-standard player. Give him a go or let him go now. I find it strange when they've lost two in a row and they have a bloke with so much talent sitting on the sidelines.''

Comets coach Wayne Barnett said he was surprised to receive a call from the Broncos saying Taylor would not be facing the Sharks. "I rub my hands with delight when we get the call from the Broncos saying Dave is in our side. He's a rare talent,'' Barnett said.

"With a young bloke, you pull them in and out sometimes - I've done it myself - but sooner or later you just have to give them a fair go. Maybe the Broncos need to give Dave that chance and see how he goes. Dave has clearly said I'm not part of your future (by signing with Souths), but he's still being paid to be at the Broncos so I'd be using the guy.''

South Sydney chief executive Shane Richardson said Taylor's predicament came as little surprise. "They've got a good track record at doing this, they did it with Justin Hodges as well,'' Richardson said.

"We always knew that was going to happen to him. But from our point of view, I'm not really worried about what they do this year. We bought him as the future of our club so if they want to play him in that comp, it's up to them, but itis disappointing."

"It doesn't change our opinion of him, that's for sure. We can't wait to get him on board. My attitude has always been when blokes are leaving, that's part and parcel of the game, you pick your best side and go forward.''

Despite his situation, Taylor has told his closest supporters he's unwilling to seek a release from the Broncos. "I spoke to Dave the other day and while he was disappointed to miss out again, an early release wasn't even mentioned,'' his manager Col Davis said. "Dave is hurt by it naturally, but the thing is Dave isn't the type of kid to go around sulking about it.''
