Last week's rankings in brackets plus their win-loss record. 1 WARRIORS (3) 2-0

They came to Brookvale Oval, they saw the Sea Eagles and they conquered them - even if they left it until very late in the day. Wins like that - against a Manly team that was desperate - are going to leave the Warriors in good shape on the competition table and great shape in the head. 2 BRISBANE (4) 2-0

They got the benefit of a non-call by the refs on an obvious knock-on leading up to a try against the Storm, but the fact remains they have shown a lot of intensity to open the season with back-to-back wins against highly-rated opponents. Now an even bigger test - the Warriors on the road. 3 MELBOURNE (1) 1-1

Missed call by the referees on the knock-on not withstanding, they were close enough to get past the Broncos in the dying stages. But - unlike in last year's finals match between these two - they couldn't come up with the try. It doesn't get any easier - now it's the Cowboys on the road. 4 NORTH QUEENSLAND (5) 1-1 Went back home after their narrow first-up loss to the Broncos on the road and won as they pleased against the Tigers. As long as their rugged forward pack remains intact and dynamos Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen stay fit, they will be a threat against any team. 5 BULLDOGS (7) 2-0

It was a Clayton's win over the Panthers, with the Bulldogs set to lose the two points for temporarily fielding a 14th man, but the fact they were able to come from behind to finish in front says a lot about their character. Typically, they will use the points loss to bond even closer as a group. 6 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (9) 1-1

Solid win over the Titans. They are still getting their act together in attack, but in the meantime their defence is strong. They celebrate going back to their home ground at Kogarah this weekend and get their arch enemies - the under-strength Sharks - at the right time.

7 CRONULLA (2) 1-1 It would be wrong to write them off after just two rounds, but their loss to the Knights rang alarm bells. They have walked a tightrope with their style of play in recent years - stingy defence and low-scoring attack - and are now in danger of falling off it. Big challenge for coach Ricky Stuart. 8 MANLY (8) 0-2

They looked to have the Warriors covered inside the final 20 minutes, but then conceded two late tries and lost. They're not concentrating as they should be, and it is costing them. But they could bounce back to their best at any stage, so let's see what happens with them over the next few weeks. 9 SOUTH SYDNEY (6) 1-1

They were strangely flat against the Eels and may have been victims of the dreadad five-day turnaround. Still, the result should serve as a timely reminder to them that while they are capable of playing spectacular football they must also be prepared to ground out wins in tight games. 10 PARRAMATTA (12) 1-1

Hung in there with tough defence against the Rabbitohs and eventually found a way to win. It wasn't great to watch, but it was a determined, 80-minute display - the likes of which was only occasionally seen from the Eels last year. Hail Nathan Hindmarsh - his battery never runs dead. 11 NEWCASTLE (15) 1-1

TIt is always good for a team's soul when they overcome injury problems to win, as the Knights did when they were reduced to only 14 fit players against the Sharks. But now they must deal with the reality of being without rep players Steve Simpson and Jarrod Mullen for a few weeks. 12 GOLD COAST (10) 1-1

It was no shock that they lost to the Dragons on the road - the Dragons are strong defensively and have the potential to do well this year - but the Titans really need to start picking up away wins if they want to make the jump from being a potential finals team to being an actual one. 13 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (14) 1-1

Bounced back from their first-round flogging at the hands of the Rabbitohs to defend well and easily beat the Raiders in Canberra, but the Roosters are going to need to produce consistent form over time to convince people that this is going to be a good year for them. 14 WESTS TIGERS (11) 1-1

The Tigers went into their game against the Cowboys with defensive problems and then turned over a heap of ball as well, which made it impossible for them to hold the opposition out. They don't want to end up in a syndrome where they must score 30 points to have a chance of winning. 15 CANBERRA (13) 0-2

Poor start to the season by a team that went into last year's finals series in sixth place. Their attack looked anaemic against the Roosters. I hate to say it, because they took an important stand in sacking him, but they are looking like they miss Todd Carney. Need to improve quickly. 16 PENRITH (16) 0-2

They didn't only have to get over the heartbreak of a last-minute loss to the Bulldogs - then they had to accept that although the Bulldogs are set to lose the two points for temporarily fielding a 14th man it won't help the Panthers because they won't get the points. It's tough out west.
