DUMPED South Sydney half-back Eddie Paea apologised for drinking after the team had been given orders to stay off the booze. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Paea admitted to breaking the club's zero alcohol policy, which was set after the Rabbitohs' seventh-straight loss.
"Yeah, (I did the wrong thing)," Paea said. "I'll just put my head down and make up for it."
But after being stripped of the captaincy for his role in the latest Rabbitohs hiccup, David Kidwell was in no talking mood.
He refused to take calls, hanging up when contacted by The Daily Telegraph.
Coach Jason Taylor's decision to drop four players sparked a mixed reaction from former players and those close to the drama.
Club legend Mario Fenech applauded the hard-line punishment while others declared players should be able enjoy a few beers after a match without penalty.
"I don't care who you are, what you are, the rules are there for everyone," Fenech said. "At the end of the day they deserved to be dropped. Breaking the rules is unacceptable.
"Even when I played, I got into trouble on the field but I never did off the field.
"JT has set the rules and he is enforcing them. He should be applauded. I have faith in everything he is doing at the club."
Fenech said the players must be accountable. "The players are big boys," Fenech said. "People dream about playing first grade and they should know what is appropriate and what is not."
Former Rabbitohs captain Sean Garlick said dumping the players was harsh.
"I can't be critical," Garlick said. "I think the players should be able to have a beer after the game whether they win, lose or draw. I don't think there is a suggestion the players aren't doing their best at the moment so they don't need people putting the boot in.
"There wasn't a suggestion of bad behaviour. Sometimes it is the best thing for you."
A source close to the club was also critical of the stern action taken by Taylor.
"It is a bit harsh," the source said. "The players aren't happy about it at all. They did nothing wrong and were only over by a very small margin. The punishment is ridiculous."
